A centrally sponsored scheme launched in May 2008 to encourage meritorious students from economically weaker sections to continue their education at the secondary and higher secondary level. Around 1,00,000 scholarships are awarded annually to Class 8 students studying in government, government-aided, or local body schools, providing ₹12,000 per year from Class 9 to 12.

- Already receiving scholarship under any other Central Government scheme
- Not a regular student in government/government-aided/local body school
- Non-Resident Indian
Selection requirements
- Examination: Qualify as per cutoff (40% General, 32% Reserved in MAT and SAT)
- Academic requirement: You must have scored at least 55% marks in Class 7 (50% for SC/ST students) to be eligible to appear for the NMMS examination.
Continuation requirements
- Continuation requirement: To continue scholarship in Class 10, you must pass Class 9. To continue in Class 11, you need 60% in Class 10 (55% for SC/ST). To continue in Class 12, you must pass Class 11.
